Bit Of Homophobia In Coverage Of Gay Club Attack? | On Top Magazine :: Gay & Lesbian News, Entertainment, Commentary & Travel

While this is not a science article, it does contain a tidbit that I have been meaning to address on this blog. The use of the word homosexual. As you may have noticed, it is still the term used in scientific writing. I can’t actually answer why. I can say that in general, scientific writing tends to be very…. perhaps clinical would be the right word. More importantly, the words need to be translatable into other languages.

Scientists try hard to stick to objective definitions of words. They try to remove hints of bias or emotion. So when you are reading scientific papers, please don’t be offended.

Besides, few scientists are offended by being called geeks or nerds. In fact, we are proud of our geekiness.
