A recent publication on LGBT teens and emotional distress. LGBT teens are at higher risk for depression and thoughts of suicide. The cause? Discrimination and the resulting emotional distress. I know what you are thinking. Tell me something I don’t already know. Here’s what I’m thinking. Share this with anyone who tells you that this is not the cause. And be sure to point out to them that the researchers are from Harvard University.

Much has been written in the popular media about gay penguins living in zoos, to the point where the Chinese had a wedding ceremony for two gay penguins. Other zoos with gay penguins are in New York City and Germany. It is so controversial that the children’s book And Tango Makes Threeis on the censorship list of anti-gay rights groups. I can assure that the book is wholesome and adorable. I know. I read it. Any child would love it and it’s a great way to introduce your children to the concept of love between two beings of the same gender.

Well, it’s not just penguins in zoos. Many other animal species participate in same sex behavior. Here’s a recent report on Japanese macaques, which are a type of monkey. (more…)

We are all going to grow older. What happens to aging LGBT folks?

Unfortunately, I have access only to the abstract for an upcoming publication in this field. However, the paper references two organizations that seem important to mention.

Services and Advocacy for Gay Elders (SAGE) and American Society on Aging’s LGBT Aging Issues Network (LAIN).

Continuing the mental health theme, this abstract published very recently. The final publication is not yet out. However, you can read the provisional publication at http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1471-244x-9-52.pdf

I encourage you to take a look. It has a different perspective than the last paper that I published.

Yep, sometimes studies find different things. That’s real life. That’s the nature of science. That’s why experimental design and asking the right questions are so important. Especially in a field like psychology where there isn’t anything tangible to measure. (more…)

Whew! This is a long research paper. I’ve published it here as it is an Open Access article which allows reproduction.

The paper is a review of many research publications regarding the mental health of lesbians, gays and bisexuals. I’m sorry, I don’t think it contains research on transgendered folks. Maybe there isn’t as much research out there to review.

I thought I would try to summarize a few of the “take home messages” from this paper as it is fairly difficult reading and quite long. Also, I did not include all of the tables and figures. You’ll have to follow the link to the original article.  The electronic version of this article is the complete one and can be found online at:http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-244X/8/70

So what did these researchers do and what did they find? (more…)
